Texas is one of the top states for ABA employment — and the market is still growing.
If you're an ABA professional considering your options, Texas belongs near the top of your list. Not because of the weather. Because the combination of population size, Medicaid coverage, and a genuinely undersupplied workforce has created one of the strongest ABA job markets in the country — and it's not peaking yet.
Whether you're an RBT looking for your first full-time role, a BCBA considering relocation, or a BCaBA trying to accumulate hours under a qualified supervisor, Texas offers scale and opportunity that few states can match.
Why the Texas Market Is Different
A few things set Texas apart from other large states:
- Nearly 30 million residents — the sheer volume of potential clients creates consistent, durable demand
- Texas Medicaid (STAR Kids) covers ABA therapy for children with autism, which has dramatically expanded provider capacity and hiring
- No state income tax — your $80,000 BCBA salary goes meaningfully further than the same number in California or New York
- Four major metro areas — Houston, DFW, Austin, and San Antonio each have distinct, robust ABA job markets
Market context: Texas has consistently ranked among the top 5 states for ABA job postings nationally. Demand has grown alongside population, and the supply of certified BCBAs has not kept pace.
Where the Jobs Are: Major Texas Markets
Houston
The largest ABA market in the state. A dense, diverse population, multiple major hospital systems, and a high concentration of ABA clinics make Houston a strong market for every credential level. The Woodlands, Sugar Land, and Katy suburbs drive particularly strong demand from family-oriented communities.
Dallas–Fort Worth
The DFW Metroplex has one of the highest concentrations of ABA providers in Texas. Frisco, Plano, McKinney, and Arlington are especially active — and the large number of independent school districts across the metro creates abundant school-based openings alongside clinic roles.
Austin
Austin's population growth has brought families who are educated, proactive about developmental concerns, and willing to travel for quality services. The city has seen rapid clinic expansion, and competition for qualified staff keeps salaries above statewide averages. Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Pflugerville are high-growth suburbs with consistent openings.
San Antonio
A large military population drives above-average autism service utilization — military families have higher rates of autism diagnosis and active access to services through both Medicaid and TRICARE. Combined with a large Medicaid-served civilian population, San Antonio offers steady, consistent demand.

ABA teams in Texas are growing — and many employers are actively competing for qualified staff.
What You Can Expect to Earn
Texas salaries for ABA professionals are competitive relative to the national average — and the no-income-tax environment improves the effective take-home considerably.
- RBT: $38,000 – $48,000 per year
- BCaBA: $52,000 – $68,000 per year
- BCBA: $72,000 – $95,000 per year
- BCBA-D / Senior Clinical Director: $90,000 – $120,000+
Austin vs. rest of state: Austin and Dallas tend to pay 5–10% above the Texas statewide average for BCBA roles, reflecting higher cost of living and stronger competition for clinical talent.
Setting matters as much as city. School-based roles typically come with benefits, summers, and pension structures. Clinic roles tend to pay more hourly but vary significantly by employer size and payer mix. Home-based Medicaid work can be flexible but requires strong self-management.
Credentials and Licensing in Texas
RBT in Texas
No state-specific license required beyond the BACB RBT credential. You need a high school diploma, a completed 40-hour training, a passed competency assessment, and to clear the RBT exam. Many Texas employers provide paid training onboarding.
BCBA in Texas
Texas does not have a state behavior analyst license — the BACB BCBA credential is the recognized standard for employers and insurance payers. BCBAs providing Medicaid-funded services must enroll as Medicaid providers through Texas HHS.
"The Texas market is unusual — you have employers in some suburbs genuinely competing for RBTs. That leverage doesn't exist everywhere. If you're qualified, negotiate."
How to Stand Out in the Texas Market
- Get bilingual if you can. A significant portion of Texas ABA clients speak Spanish at home — bilingual RBTs and BCBAs command premium salaries and have near-zero competition for roles
- Target growing suburbs over downtown. Frisco, Pflugerville, Round Rock, and Katy have high demand and lower saturation than metro cores
- Connect through TxABA. The Texas Association for Behavior Analysis holds conferences and regional events where employers are actively recruiting
- Ask about supervision support upfront. If you're pursuing your BCBA, choose employers who can provide structured, documented supervision built into your schedule — not an afterthought

Texas's suburban expansion is one of the primary drivers of ABA job growth — families, schools, and clinics expanding together.
